Exploring Indonesia: Travel Tips

Indonesia is a land of so many cultures, peoples, animals, customs, plants, sights, art and foods that it defies homogenization.

The people are as radically different from each other as the variety of landscapes you’ll see. Over time, deep and rich cultures have evolved, from the spiritual Balinese to the animist belief system of the Asmat people of Papua.

Indonesia is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches and volcanoes in the world. So whether you’re looking to relax on a pristine beach or explore one of Indonesia’s many active volcanoes, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Indonesia Travel Basics

Currency (IDR)

The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). One US dollar is currently worth around 14,000 IDR.

For most goods and services, you will need to pay in cash as credit and debit cards are not widely accepted. It’s a good idea to have small denominations of cash on hand for everyday purchases.

If you’re planning on doing any shopping while in Indonesia, be aware that bargaining is expected and sometimes even required. So don’t be afraid to haggle a bit to get the best price.

Power

The electrical system in Indonesia is 220 volts, 50 cycles AC. Outlets are usually the European two-pin type.

If you’re planning on bringing any electrical devices from home, you will need to bring a voltage converter and adapter.

You’ll also want to be aware that power outages are not uncommon in Indonesia. So it’s a good idea to have a backup plan in case of an outage.

Drinking water

The water in Indonesia is generally not safe to drink. It’s best to stick to bottled water for both drinking and brushing your teeth.

If you’re traveling to a remote area where bottled water is not available, be sure to boil the water before drinking it.

You should also avoid ice cubes as they may be made from tap water. And be careful when swimming in rivers or lakes as the water may not be clean.

Tipping in Indonesia

Tipping is not common in Indonesia. However, if you receive good service, it’s always appreciated.

For restaurant bills, it’s common to round up to the nearest thousand rupiah. So if your bill is 45,000 IDR, you would leave a tip of 5,000 IDR.

If you’re staying at a hotel, you can leave a small tip for the maid each day. And for tour guides or drivers, it’s customary to give them a 10% tip.

Getting around in Indonesia

There are a few different ways to get around Indonesia. The most popular methods are by car, motorcycle, or bus.

If you’re planning on renting a car, be aware that traffic can be very congested in major cities like Jakarta and Surabaya.

Motorcycles are a popular choice for getting around as they’re cheaper than cars and easier to maneuver through traffic. Just be sure to wear a helmet and drive safely.

Buses are also an option, although they can be crowded and uncomfortable. But they’re often the cheapest way to travel between cities.

When to visit Indonesia

The best time to visit Indonesia depends on what you want to see and do.

If you’re interested in surfing, the best time to visit is between April and October. This is when the waves are the biggest and most consistent.

If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit during the shoulder seasons of March-April and October-November.

And if you’re looking for the best deals, December-January is typically the cheapest time to travel to Indonesia.

Keep in mind that the weather in Indonesia is tropical with two distinct seasons: the wet season and the dry season.

The wet season typically runs from October to April, while the dry season is from May to September.
