15x What to do in Zakynthos + our best travel tips
Zakynthos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands and is located in the Ionian Sea, near the Peloponnese peninsula. Despite the fact that it is quite touristy (especially in high season) and known for its nightlife, there are also many quiet and authentic places to discover. The colors of the sea, the impressive cliffs, the smell of pine trees and the warm Greek hospitality, Zakynthos has a lot to offer, a beautiful mix of nature, culture and tranquility.
We did a road trip through Zakynthos (also called Zante), exploring the island at our own pace, often with a spontaneous stop here and there, just because something looked nice or because we needed a place to take a break with the kids. Based on that, we have listed our 15 best things to do in Zakynthos for you. Including some top sights such as the shipwreck on Navagio Beach, but also lesser-known places and rustic villages inland.
In 2 to 3 days you can do most things in Zakynthos. However, if you also want some beach days or boat trips during your trip, then you better stay a few days longer, even up to 1 to 2 weeks. You can also add Zakynthos as an extra destination to your itinerary of Greece, just like we did.
How to get to Zakynthos and how to get around the island
The easiest way to get to Zakynthos is by plane. You can sometimes fly directly to Zakynthos from Belgium or the Netherlands, but usually you have a stopover in Athens. On Skyscanner you can easily compare prices and book your tickets.

If you are on a road trip through the South of Greece, you can take the ferry in Kyllini. This is also how we went to Zakynthos. The trip takes about 1h15 and on board there are all the facilities for a pleasant trip. During the summer there are several ferries per day. But also in the winter you can easily get to Zakynthos. Are you coming from Italy or another place in Greece? Then check out Ferryscanner for all other ferry routes that take you to Zakynthos.
To visit the best things in Zakynthos, it is convenient to have a rental car. You can compare prices to rent a car in Greece on Rentalcars
The best time to travel to Zakynthos is from June to September. In winter it can be cold, but then you have the advantage that there are almost no tourists.
GOOD TO KNOWN:We made our trip out of season, beginning of April. And we also had bad weather. So on our pictures it can sometimes look grayer or less lively, than when you normally visit Zakynthos in the sun and high season. So imagine our trip, but with beautiful weather and everything open :-).
What to do in Zakynthos
Visit the shipwreck at Navagio Beach
Let’s start with the classic: the shipwreck at Navagio Beach (also called Shipwreck Beach). Yes, it’s touristy. And yes, it’s in thousands of photos. It’s probably even the first image you see when you visit Zakynthos. But once you’re standing on top of the cliffs and see the bright blue water with the shipwreck stranded in the white sand, you’ll understand why this view is world famous.
The wreck has been lying in this small bay since 1982, surrounded by huge cliffs that drop beautifully into the water. The best view is not from the beach itself, but from a high vantage point. You can find that here. Be careful, because people have fallen off the cliffs trying to take the perfect photo. If you have a drone, it is a bit easier to take beautiful photos.
We drove there early in the morning to avoid the crowds as this is one of the top sights in Zakynthos. Luckily we were there in early spring, but it can get very busy in the summer.
TIP: You can only reach Navagio beach and the wreck by boat tour. Boat trips leave daily from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos or Zakynthos town, often combined with a visit to the Blue Caves. The beach is pebbled, so bring water shoes.
Discover the Blue Caves
Along the northeast coast of Zakynthos you will find the impressive Blue Caves. These natural caves light up in different shades of blue due to the reflection of sunlight on the water. You can best go there by boat, often in combination with a visit to Shipwreck beach. Try to go for a boat trip with a small group in the morning. This will really give you the time to admire everything in peace.
Often the captain lets you swim and snorkel for a while. The water is crystal clear and quite cold, but the feeling of floating between those blue walls is unforgettable. It is also great for children, as if they are in some kind of magical aquarium.
TIP: You can also rent a boat yourself to explore the caves (you don’t even need a license). The caves start a little past Agios Nikolaos and continue until just before Skinari Cap. If you are more sporty, rent a kayak.
Visit the village of Keri and the Keri Caves
The mountain village of Keri is located in the southern hills of Zakynthos and still exudes an authentic and peaceful atmosphere. We took a walk through the narrow streets, admired the beautiful Panagi Keriotissas church from 1745 and had lunch on a terrace overlooking the hills.
But there are also some other fun things to do near Keri:
- The Keri Caves, which, like the Blue Caves, can only be reached by boat. You sail past steep rock formations, narrow passages and caves where you sometimes literally have to swim underneath. You can also see stalactites and stalagmites growing on the walls and snorkel or dive in the crystal clear water. Either book a boat tour or rent a boat yourself.
- Just outside the village is the beautiful viewpoint on the Mizithres rocks and the turquoise water. This is really the most blue water we have ever seen.
Please be aware that the roads around Keri can be challenging at times and be careful as the cliffs drop straight down at the viewpoint.
Enjoy the sunset in Keri or Kampi
On the most famous beaches in Zakynthos like Laganas you can’t enjoy a sunset because they are located in the east or south of the island. So if you want a romantic moment, you better go to the villages Keri or Kampi.
Maybe you are already in Keri for the caves or the beautiful view of the Mizithres rocks. From there or at the Keri lighthouse (where there is a parking lot) and the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant, you can enjoy the amazing sunset. Or go to the Sunset Taverna in the village and enjoy a delicious meal in the meantime.
In Kampi there are 3 taverns where you can enjoy the sunset: Porto Schiza (our favorite), Sunset Michali’s and Cross Taverna. From Kampi you also have a beautiful view over the cliffs.
Sail to the National Marine Park and Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is a protected park in the Ionian Sea, located on the southeast coast of the island. It was founded in 1999 to protect the rare Caretta Caretta turtles. These come to the beaches of Zakynthos to lay their eggs and then stay here during the high season (May to October). In addition to the turtles, you will also find many other types of fish.
One of the best things to do in Zakynthos is a boat trip to Marathonisi, better known as Turtle Island. This small uninhabited island looks like it has the shape of a turtle. It is located in the bay of Laganas, where the real Caretta Caretta sea turtles nest.
You can explore the park by boat to see the turtles in their natural environment. There are also exhibitions about the turtles. On the island itself you can also swim, snorkel or just relax in the shallow water.
TIP: You can also see the turtles from some other beaches. Especially when you swim or snorkel at the beaches of Laganas, Kalamki, and Dafni you have a great chance to meet these fantastic sea creatures. Keep in mind that this is an endangered species, so keep enough distance and respect their habitat.
Wander the streets of Zakynthos town
A visit to Zakynthos town (also called Zante town) should not be missed during your stay on the island. We found it a nice mix of liveliness and Greek charm. The city is not a large metropolis (you can get around in a few hours), but that is precisely what makes it so pleasant.
You can stroll along the promenade along the harbour where many pleasure boats, fishing boats and ferries are moored. Take a seat on a terrace and get lost in the narrow streets (for example Alexandrou Roma) with shops, boutiques and cosy cafés.
The main square of the city is Dionysios Solomos Square, and was named after the Greek poet, just like the airport by the way. He wrote the text of the Greek national anthem on one of the mountains in Zakynthos. Solomos Square is the meeting place for both locals and tourists. On the square you will find the public library, with a museum about the resistance on the ground floor.
TIP: Visit the nougat factory “I Zakynthos” to taste this delicious treat and learn how they have been making it here since the beginning of the last century.
Don’t miss the Agios Dionysios church, dedicated to Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of the island and an important figure in the Greek Orthodox Church. In 1893 the church was completely destroyed by an earthquake. It was completely rebuilt and fortunately survived another earthquake in 1953.
At night, the city really comes alive: the lights reflecting in the water, families strolling along the quayside and the smell of freshly baked souvlaki in the air. We enjoyed a relaxing dinner by the sea, overlooking the boats in the harbour and the gently glowing hills in the background. Zakynthos town may not be the place for grand sights, but it is for atmosphere, good food and that real Greek city feeling.
TIP: If you have some more time, head to the Bohali district, where on top of a hill you can find the ruins of Kastro Castle, an old Venetian fortress. It has largely collapsed due to an earthquake, but offers a beautiful view of the city. Early risers can come here to watch the sunrise. In the evening it is also enchantingly beautiful with a view of the lights of the city.
Visit the tiny Cameo Island
This islet (created by an earthquake in the 17th century) can be reached via a small footbridge from Agios Sostis for a small entrance fee (in our case, however, it was partly broken down, in the low season). It is best known for its crystal clear water and golden beaches. On the small island, there is also a bar where you can enjoy a nice cocktail, rent beach chairs, etc.
You can combine this with a trip in one of the glass bottom boats. With a bit of luck you might even see one of the turtles.
Relax for an afternoon on one of the many beaches in Zakynthos
Zakynthos is perhaps best known for its many beaches and for good reason. You will find some fantastic beaches here, ranging from miles of sandy beaches to small rocky coves. And all with the most beautiful azure waters. Here are some of the most famous beaches in Zakynthos as well as some hidden gems:
- Laganas Beach: The most popular bay of Zakynthos, no less than 9km long from Laganas to Kalamaki. You can do countless activities such as windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, and kayaking. In addition to the sports, there are also many beach bars and clubs where you can party until late at night. So if you are looking for peace and quiet, you better not put Laganas Bay on your Zakynthos bucket list :-). Most excursions to the caves and Marathonisi also depart from here in Laganas Bay.
- Dafni Beach: a rather dark beach on the Skopos peninsula that you can reach by following a winding road through the hills. It is very quiet, despite the two tavernas that are there. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs. Dafni Beach is also a protected breeding ground for the endangered Caretta Caretta turtles. So you will be limited on the beach, but you can swim and sunbathe there.
- Gerakas Beach: undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sandy beaches and the best sights in Zakynthos. From May to October, sea turtles can nest there, and you should also take this into account. In the past, this beach was also known for the clay they used to smear themselves. In the meantime, this part has been closed to prevent erosion. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, but make sure you bring enough food with you because there are no restaurants. During the summer, there is usually a lifeguard present because it can be quite busy.
- Xigia Beach: This is not just any beach. The sulphurous water, which comes from natural springs, makes it smell a bit ‘strange’, but it is supposed to be good for your skin and joints. It took us a while to get used to the smell, but after a swim, our skin did indeed feel softer. The beach itself is small, surrounded by steep rocks, with beautiful, clear water. Bring water shoes, because the beach is covered with pebbles.
Discover the green and authentic interior of Zakynthos
Although the coast often steals the show, we found the interior of Zakynthos at least as charming. Small villages such as Loucha, Agia Marina, Kiliomenos and Agios Leon are quiet, authentic, and full of friendly locals who are happy to have a chat.
We rode at a leisurely pace through the hills, stopping at a local taverna for a plate of moussaka, discovering hidden churches, fragrant herb fields and endless olive groves.
TIP: Do you really want to discover the authentic interior of Zakynthos? Explore the villages and beautiful roads by bike or on foot via one of the many hiking trails.
The villages that are on the tourist routes have sometimes lost their authentic atmosphere. But in villages outside the main routes, you can still taste the real Greek culture. A must if you really want to get to know the island.
Gyri is one of the oldest and highest villages of Zakynthos. There are no more than 30 people living at 500 m altitude but with a beautiful view of the surroundings. This village is also close to the Hayiotis Cave (60m deep). From the village, you can also climb the highest mountain of Zakynthos, Mount Vrachionas, which is 753m high.
TIP: If you go on a road trip you should take into account that you can sometimes encounter narrow or steep roads. The views are fantastic. It is nice to have your own transport.
Visit the Zante Water Village water park
In the northwest of Zakynthos (Sarakinado) lies Zante Watervillage, a large water park. There are many slides, swimming pools and a slow river where you can float around. It can be quite busy, but this park will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of Zakynthos for your children.
Taste the local products of Zakynthos
There are no less than 2 million olive trees on Zakynthos and a lot of vineyards. Olive oil and wine tasting is something you should definitely not miss when visiting Zakynthos. If you really want to immerse yourself in the local food culture, you can also follow this super fun cooking class where you learn to prepare some local dishes.
Near Kiliomenos you will find Art & Wine Winery. Here you can get a tour of the olive grove and the winery with accompanying wine tasting + lunch. You will learn how olive oil is made. Another olive grove you can visit is the Aristeon Olive Press. There is a museum and you can taste different types of olive oil and also eat something.
At Solomos Wines, not far from Zakynthos town, you can also taste local wines between May and October. Another place to taste wine is Grampsas Winery, about 10 kilometers from the capital. Here you can choose from different tours and even enjoy a delicious meal in their restaurant.
TIP: In the northwest of the island you will find the oldest olive tree. Definitely worth a drive, also because of the nice cafes and shops with traditional products in the area. cafes and souvenir stalls in the square. Go to Lekkes Farm, run by a family, with delicious olive oil, home-made cheeses, wines and other drinks.
Visit the Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery
The Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery is located on the top of Mount Skopos, near the village of Argassi. From the monastery you get an impressive view of the island and the Ionian Sea, but it is also a historically interesting place.
It was built in 1446 in Byzantine style on the foundations of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo and Artemis. Inside, beautiful wall paintings can still be admired.
The walk to the monastery is an experience in itself. From Argassi, a path of about 4 km long leads you through untouched nature, past fragrant herbs and bushes. Although the route is sometimes steep and challenging, you are rewarded with breathtaking views. For those who find the walk too difficult, it is also possible to get closer with a quad or off-road vehicle.
Near the entrance you will find the Skopos Café, a simple cantina where you can rest and have a drink in the shade of the trees.
Discover the rugged coast and most beautiful bays
Besides the many long beaches in Zakynthos, you will also find small bays with rocks ideal for snorkeling or small hidden beaches. One of the most fun things to do in Zakynthos is to drive from bay to bay, swim, and look for your favorite.
We really liked Porto Limnionas Beach, a secluded bay surrounded by steep limestone cliffs with clear blue water and rugged rock formations. Here you will not find a sandy beach but rock plateaus, ideal for sunbathing or diving directly into the refreshing water. Bring your snorkel, because here you can admire colorful sponges, sea anemones, small fish, and some caves. There is also a taverna with a terrace where you can enjoy traditional Greek dishes and a beautiful view.
Some other top spots are Porto Vromi Beach and Filippoi Beach, but feel free to explore for yourself and let us know which is your favorite!
Discover the seaside resort of Tsilivi and the nature reserve of Tragaki
The seaside resort of Tsilivi is located on the west coast of Zakynthos and is a lively, yet easy-going destination. The wide sandy beach stretches for about two kilometres and is surrounded by numerous cosy taverns, cafés, and beach bars where you can enjoy a delicious meal or a refreshing drink with your feet in the sand.
For those who like to be active, Tsilivi offers plenty of opportunities: from snorkeling in the crystal clear water to other fun water sports. But nature lovers will also get their money’s worth here. Just outside the center, you will find the green nature area around Tragaki, where you can make beautiful walks and bike rides between the olive groves and pine trees, with a beautiful view of the sea every now and then.
Visit Anafonitria and the monastery
Anafonitria is located on one of the crossings to the Navagio shipwreck. As a result, a lot of traffic passes through the village, and you can find a few stalls with local products.
In the village, if you pass by anyway, lies the ancient Anafonitria monastery. This is where Agios Dionysos used to live. Definitely worth passing by, although some people think that it no longer feels authentic because of the many stalls.
Our favourite restaurants in Zakynthos
During our trip, we discovered that not only are there a lot of sights to see in Zakynthos, but the island is also a feast for your taste buds. Here are some of our favorite restaurants in Zakynthos:
- Ionio Pelagos (Zakynthos city): a fantastic local Greek tavern in Zakynthos town, with freshly caught fish. Definitely try the spaghetti with seafood and the grilled fish.
- Taverna Psarou: nice place by the water in Psarou. Here they have the best fresh fish. Try the octopus in red wine sauce and grilled squid.
- Paliomylos Taverna (Loucha): Come here for an authentic Greek atmosphere, where the moussaka is truly homemade and the dolmades are filled with fresh herbs.
- Potamitis Windmill: a good grill restaurant at an old windmill (nice to take some typical pictures), where you can also swim nearby and even dive from the cliffs.
- Porto Schiza Taverna: Here you can eat delicious local dishes while enjoying the best sunset view in Zakynthos!
Whether you fancy a quick gyros, a lavish fish dinner or a plate full of mezze to share, on Zakynthos you’ll find a place to suit every appetite and mood, where you’ll leave with a full belly and a satisfied smile.
Where to stay in Zakynthos
Zakynthos offers a suitable base for every type of traveller, whether you are looking for peace, liveliness, or something in between. If you want to go all out for the nightlife, then Laganas is perfect for you. However, we are less into that and opted for a very nice stay at Soso’s Sea View Apartment, located in a central but quiet spot with a view of the sunset in the evening.
Nice places to stay in Zakynthos are the cozy and lively seaside resort of Tsilivi at Isola Concept or the luxurious Contessina Hotel, with a beautiful beach and nice restaurants, but without the crowds of, for example, Laganas.
If you really want to find peace and quiet, then the mountain villages such as Agios Leon are the place to be. In the holiday home Sempreviva, for example, you sleep between the olive trees, and in the morning you only hear the birds and the wind. Families often feel at home in Alykanas or Kalamaki, where the atmosphere is friendly and the beaches slope gently into the sea. Our favorite there is the Fiore Beach Studios, located on the beach! If you prefer to wake up in an apartment with a view of the harbor and wander through charming streets in the evening, then Zakynthos town is a great choice.
Whether you opt for a small-scale guesthouse, a luxury villa with private pool, or a simple apartment near the sea, you are guaranteed to find accommodation that suits you on Zakynthos.
Hopefully, this article with the best things to do in Zakynthos has helped you plan your trip to Zakynthos, where to eat, and where to stay! We certainly had a great time on the island, and we hope you will too! Have a nice trip!
