- Boulevard Saint-Germain: as we mentioned, the Saint-Germain district is best known for its artistic past. In the Boulevard Saint-Germain, you will find the most expensive boutiques, but also many cafes where famous writers and artists gathered.
TIP: Head to Café de Flore, an iconic place where the likes of Hemingway and Picasso used to drink their coffee. Come here for classic French cuisine and its famous hot chocolate. Or have breakfast on the terrace of Les Deux Magots, another famous café in Paris.

Quartier Latin: affordable student area
Quartier Latin is a historic district in the 5th Arrondissement of Paris and the oldest arrondissement in Paris. This district is located opposite Le Marais, on the other side of the Seine, and is very centrally located close to many major attractions. This makes Quartier Latin one of the nicest neighborhoods in Paris and also very popular to spend the night.
But the Latin Quarter is best known as a student area, mainly due to the presence of the world-famous La Sorbonne University and many other schools. You may even hear some Latin spoken here in the many medieval, winding streets.
All these (international) students naturally create a very hip, lively and multicultural atmosphere. Here you will find (at affordable prices) nice places to eat, cozy cafes and of course also a bustling nightlife area.
TIP: Latin Quarter is also known for its many bookshops. The most iconic is the English-language Shakespeare & Company, where writers such as Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce visited. You can also have a drink here on the terrace with a view of Notre Dame.
Best things to do in Quartier Latin
Panthéon: the impressive building was built as a church, but was later turned into a mausoleum for famous French citizens such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Victor Hugo. You can climb the dome with a beautiful view of the city as a result.
Jardin des Plantes: the beautiful park is one of the first botanic gardens in France and is home to thousands of plant species. The park also has a zoo and several museums. Lovely to walk around in good weather.
Sorbonne: this is one of the most famous universities in the world and is located in the heart of the Latin Quarter. The university building has beautiful neoclassical architecture and is definitely worth a visit.
Musée de Cluny: a museum dedicated to medieval art with an extensive collection of artifacts, including the famous “Lady and the Unicorn” tapestries. The Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle is also definitely worth a visit in this district.
Place de la Contrescarpe: a cozy square surrounded by cafes and restaurants and a popular place to relax and enjoy the local life.
TIP: Stroll through the pleasant shopping street Rue Mouffetard, especially when the weather is nice. Then everyone sits outside on the terraces and squares.

Grande Mosque de Paris: The largest mosque in France and the second largest in Europe is definitely worth a visit. You are allowed to visit everything except the prayer rooms. Because this district is slightly more affordable than the surrounding neighborhoods, but still very centrally located, this is one of the most popular places to stay. Latin Quarter is also our personal favorite.

Montparnasse is well connected to the rest of Paris by public transport, with the Montparnasse Bienvenue train station as an important hub. From there you can also take the train to Brittany. That is why you will also find many crêperies in this district.

Montmartre is a famous neighborhood (especially for the Moulin Rouge and the white Sacre Coeur) in the north of Paris, in the 18th arrondissement. This nice neighborhood in Paris is a little further from the center but is well served by public transport, including metro lines 2 and 12, and within walking distance of Gare Du Nord and the other neighborhoods.

The storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 took place in this district, an important moment in the French Revolution. The Bastille prison was stormed by the revolutionaries, leading to the start of the French Revolution. This historic moment is still celebrated on July 14 as France’s national holiday, known as the “Fête de la Bastille”.
Today, La Bastille is a lively district with a mix of historic charm, beautiful green gardens, narrow streets, and modern attractions.
