During our time in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), where we spent a couple of weeks, we wanted to surprise our girls with a nice day out. I wrote an article on what to do in Kuala Lumpur with kids a while ago, but we didn’t have the chance to try out everything during our first visit.

Being back in Kuala Lumpur now, we really want to go to the Sunway Lagoon theme park. It’s the one that stood out the most when I wrote my article. I am sure the kids will love it!

But first, let’s start with some history because the site used to be an old tin mine. It was only in 1992 that the theme park was opened. Since then the place has more than 90 attractions, is spread out over 6 different parks, and even has his own hotels and shopping malls. As one day wouldn’t be enough, we decided to go two whole days to the magic of Sunway Lagoon!

The ‘Sunway Lagoon’ surprise

When our two girls get in the taxi, they have no idea where we are heading. Maybe to the sea, or climbing another mountain, tasting some local tea… They cannot guess what will happen to them in the next 48 hours.

As we come closer to the park, the majestuous lion of the Sunway Mall is giving them a hint. We are getting too close to something that might interest them… When they notice the Sunway Lagoon sign they get crazy, what a surprise! They are over the moon when we enter the park and totally ready to explore the Sunway Lagoon for fun over the next two days!

From the center of Kuala Lumpur, it is easy to take a taxi or Grab to the Theme park.

Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon

Because it’s raining a little bit, we head over to one of the water sections first. We’re getting wet anyway ?! Some of you probably know SpongeBob, Patrick, and all their friends at Nickelodeon. Sunway Lagoon has a water- and attraction park entirely devoted to them.

After we climbed the wonder steps, our first experience was the big SpongeBob splash adventure. A big hit for our girls! They keep running around in the big water playground. More than 6 water slides all end up in the big pool.

They run on the stairs, avoiding water fountains and falling water buckets. But when the giant bucket is full, there is no escape and a giant splash is released on the kids. They have so much fun and don’t care for the extra raindrops.

The girls having lots of fun in the big splash water playground of SpongeBob!

After that, we move forward because the lost lagoon has some amazing waterslides. First, we tried the Primeval which has 3 different slides. The kids climb from one waterslide to the other while we carry the tubes upstairs. We’ll all sleep well tonight ?

But it’s so much fun! We end with our two favorite ones. The Kubarango, which almost makes us weightless, and the Jungle Fury, where you go down twisting and dropping on a big round tube. It’s time for a pizza break and some rest after that!

We all love the Kubarango, which almost makes you weightless!

Wildlife Park

Because it’s still a bit rainy, we decided to visit the animals first. It’s ideal weather to spot them, as it’s less warm. After looking for the birds on the treetop terrace, we follow the jungle trail and meet the big lions!

One of them is walking right in front of the kids. They watch him with admiration, it’s very impressive to be next to such a big and dangerous animal! Luckily there is a window in between them.

The lion walking right in front of us was very impressive!

A beautiful trail leads you from one animal to another. We see bears, tigers, panthers, and so many more amazing animals. Unfortunately, the animal’s show is cancelled because of the rain but inside the building, some of the animal keepers let the kids touch a snake and a chameleon.

Their faces are full of amazement! They’ve never touched a snake before! And a bit further, they each can hold a big parrot on their arm.

The Extreme Park and Water Park

Before we head over to the Water Park, we cross the longest hanging bridge in South East Asia. When you walk to the other side, you have an amazing view of the theme park. Yuna, Hanne and mum love it! Daddy is a bit afraid of heights, so he crosses the bridge quicker while we enjoy the views.

It’s definitely an adventure to cross the longest suspension bridge!

Once you cross the bridge, you enter the Extreme Park. The kids are not old enough to do karting, bungee jumping, or hanging on the zip line. So we head over to the Water Park. At 4 pm it’s time for the big waves in the mean pool. When the first wave is coming we are surprised by the size of it. Having spent some months in Australia, the kids aren’t afraid anymore and jump straight into them.

After going to the Waterplex 5D, a great movie experience that will make you wed, we end our day in the water playground of Litlle Zimbabwe. We are exhausted but have so much more to see! Luckily we have one more day to explore the rest of the park. After Sunway Lagoon closes, we head over to the huge Sunway Pyramid Mall to eat something before we head back to our apartment.

It is also possible to sleep in the park. They have some nice hotels next to the theme park.

Time for dinner after an amazing day at Sunway Lagoon. We head over to the Sunway Pyramid Mall.

Amusement Park

On our second day, we start with the Amusement Park. Because it’s almost the end of Ramadan, and the sun is shining, the park has more visitors than our first day. But luckily it’s so big we don’t have the feeling it’s crowded. And we have a Quack Xpress pass, which allows us to skip the queues and enjoy the rides without waiting time. Absolutely worth the investment, it saves you a lot of time!

First, we go to the Grand Canyon River. Although it’s not a slide, you get wet of course. It’s great fun when you’re heading for a waterfall, and there is no way to escape. The sun is shining, so it’s a nice refreshment! After some relaxing rides on the Wagon wheel, while mommy is on the Roller Coaster, the girls go wild on the Colorado Splash.

We have to remind them there are still a lot of other things to do to get them away from it. Tim to head back the Water Park, where we have a delicious lunch in the Beach Bistro.

Lots of fun avoiding the falls and splashes in the Grand Canyon River.

Back to the Water Park

We still have to do the main and probably most visited attraction, the Vuvuzela! We don’t know exactly what to expect but it looks promising! Once we are in the gigantic tube the adrenaline rises. So much fun! The kids are screaming and laughing the entire time! This is one of the world’s highest and largest water rides and in the end, you fall into the plummet. After three times climbing the stairs, we feel we’ve experienced the Vuvuzela thoroughly.

The Vuvuzela is definitely one of the most thrilling attractions of the park! We loved it!!

The Congo Challenge and the Cameroon Climb are two other slides in the Water Park. Do I still need to say we liked them a lot? Honestly, there haven’t been many, if any, slides that disappointed us or the kids. Meanwhile, some dancers are entertaining the public while everybody is running around in swimsuits having the best time of their life!

To end our second day of excitement here, we decided to do the Jungle Fury again, cross the bridge once more, and finish with the Zambezi lazy river. Not spectacular in itself, but so much fun trying not to get wet in the waterfalls halfway.

The kids play a little bit more in the water playgrounds and on a tube in the main pool. We leave the park completely exhausted but full of great experiences and memories. After dinner at the Sunway Mall, we head back to our place. We don’t have to rock the kids asleep.

Relaxing after two days of fun in the main surf pool of Sunway Lagoon.

What do we think about the park?

We absolutely loved our experience at Sunway Lagoon. If you come to Kuala Lumpur, be sure to check it out. It’s even a great place to spend a long layover between two flights. Just come straight from the airport to one of the Sunway hotels, such as the Sunway Pyramid Hotel, Sunway Resort Hotel, or the Sunway Clio Hotel. Then have 1 or more days of fun with the kids and take your flight the next day.

The park is the perfect mix of water, amusement, and animals. Our kids were having fun all day long. Because there is so much variation they never got bored. And when the temperature is too hot (which often happens in this part of the world ) just dive into the water or go down one of the slides to cool down. But even on a rainy day, it’s still warm enough to enjoy all the water attractions.

Almost everybody just runs around in their swimming suits throughout the whole park. Which is funny because there are rollercoasters and other attractions as well. We’ve never seen that before, but of course in Europe, it’s often not warm enough to do that. So if you want to do the same, which turned out to be very handy, be sure to bring a decent swimming suit that you can wear all day.

The staff is friendly and the food is good. They have a lot of places to buy food and drinks, both healthy and fast food. Showers and dressing rooms are provided and you can keep your personal belongings in the lockers. If possible, we would advise taking a ticket for two days so you don’t need to hurry. You definitely won’t be bored.

And the Quack Xpress pass is definitely a good investment as well, no more waiting queues.
We’ll definitely come back to the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park if we visit Kuala Lumpur again. Thank you so much for those amazing days!
